Jenny Spanheimer
Age: 36
Why did you join the 52 Peak Club: I joined the club to find friends to hike with, I loved being outdoors and exploring and just didn't have a group of people who wanted to do that. The club more than met my expectations - I have met some amazing friends who have become my second family and I have gone on some pretty awesome adventures!
Date Completed all 52 Peaks: Aug 15th, 2014 (67th person to become a 53er)
Toughest Peak: I was not a fan of Mummy's Chin because of all of the loose scree and the brittleness of the rock in Charleston. I love climbing and am not a fan of Charleston because the rock breaks away so easily. I also don't like driving all the way to Charleston! I have gone on some pretty awesome adventures.
Favorite Hike: I love all-day adrenaline-filled excursions! I have pretty fabulous memories from so many hikes because of the characters I hiked with... but I think my favorite hike was doing White Pinnacle to Dead Horse Point to South Summit (and almost to Wilson). We got on a different route and had a pretty awesome adrenaline-filled day! We started in the dark and ended in the dark - I couldn't think of a better way to spend my day! I have also had a fabulous time exploring various routes on Rainbow!
How did you feel once you became a 53er: It was nice to be done, but it was not really about the cards for me, I have done all except one of the Red Rock routes at least twice. It was about getting out there and having a fabulous day with my friends. I was never in a rush to get done, it actually kinda snuck up on me once we started doing Charleston hikes.
Advice for new hikers: Start with what you feel comfortable with. There are ways around tricky things if you aren't comfortable with them - but sometimes it's important to push yourself a little too because things that look hard and scary often aren't as scary as they look. The nice thing about this group is it seems like there is always someone around to offer a hand or foothold to make trying new things easier!
