Lisa Shapiro

Bio:

I am originally from New York, but have lived in California and Florida.  I moved to Henderson, Nevada in 1996 when offered a teaching position.  I taught middle school orchestra for nine years and am now a high school counselor.  I love to workout and just completed boot camp as well as the 52 Peaks.  I have two little boys and a wonderful boyfriend that loves to hike with me.  I know that my boys will be excellent scramblers when they get older....it's in their genes!

Age:  42

Why did you join the 52 Peak Club:

I have always enjoyed the outdoors and hiking.  I joined a couple of hiking meet up groups a few years ago to broaden my hiking experience and meet new people. The 52 Peak Club is by far the BEST hiking group because this one has the most fun and challenging hikes as well as the most competent and welcoming leaders.  I have learned so much from the leaders and other members.  My hiking and scrambling skills have improved immensely from all of my experiences on these hikes. I have gained confidence, but at the same time am always humbled by Mother Nature.  I can honestly say that the knowledge and skills developed during my journey also transfer to other facets of my life.  I am so grateful for the 52 Peak Club.

Date Completed all 52 Peaks: July 4, 2015

Toughest Peak:

The toughest peak for me was probably Mt. Wilson or Bridge Mountain.  I did those peaks when I was new to the group.  They were physically and mentally challenging.  The fact that I was able to make it to the peaks gave me a great sense of accomplishment.

Favorite Hike:

I have so many favorites.   I would say that White Pinnacle and Icebox Peak are my favorites in Red Rock for the adventure, exposure and scrambling.  I can remember feeling on top of the world on those two peaks, kind of like a super-hero!

How did you feel once you became a 53er:

I feel so accomplished for completing the 52 peaks.  It took a little over two years for me to finish due to some life changes and injuries.  It was a goal that always seemed so far off, but worthwhile.  I feel so proud to be part of this amazing group of adventurers

 Advice for new hikers:

I would advise new hikers to thoroughly read the hiking write ups to know what to expect and how to prepare for each hike.  I would also advise newcomers to make sure to read Branch's hiking tips and to have the proper gear for each hike.  It is especially important during the summer to hydrate not only during the hike, but also the day before the hike.  Pack electrolytes and enough food to keep your tank full!
