Rob Shaw
Bio: I moved to Vegas in 1986 and have worked in the same field for over 26 years. I have enjoyed the outdoor life since I was a child, hiking and camping since I can remember. For over twenty years I drove thru Redrock and thought, nice place and only got out of the car and walked around Calico Hills.I was sure that if I went any further I would get lost. I eventually did do some of the hikes that were simple trails. Fast forward to Spring 2012. After landing in the E.R. and spending the night , thinking I had a heart attack, my doctor told me I didn't but if I didn't change my lifestyle, I would eventually have one. After exercising at a gym and getting into backpacking I felt better but knew that I wanted more. Then I saw a news report about this hiking club and joined HLV. Outside of quitting smoking, this was by far the best thing I have ever done to stay healthy..
Age: 53
Why did you join the 52 Peak Club: Purely health reasons at first. I needed to get into shape and stay that way. What I didn't expect was all the friendships that developed since then.
Date Completed all 52 Peaks: Oct 4th, 2014 (81st person to become a 53er)
Toughest Peak: My first peak I hiked with the group, Sisters. I thought Branch was trying to kill me. I thought , if I don't die today I will keep hiking. (haa). What I learned was that I thought I was in good "hiking shape". I was not but I had a baseline to start from to get there.
Favorite Hike: White Pinnacle.
How did you feel once you became a 53er: I was overwhelmed at first and it never really set in until we left the peak. Halfway down I felt I had accomplished something huge.
Advice for new hikers: Listen to your Leader! Stay behind the leader and let him / her lead. Follow their instructions because they know what they are doing. READ THE HIKE DESCRIPTION. If it is listed at your hiking speed, get on. If not, wait until a leader posts one that is. Arrive early and be prepared to hike. Pay close attention to your surroundings and hike safe. Maintain a good hiking shape and you will be able to keep up. Don't get intimidated and think you can't do it. YOU CAN and you will! Ask for help if you need it. There will be several hikers that are more than willing to assist you. Finally, have fun, don't complain about things. Everyone hiking wants to enjoy the day and not listen to someone whine. Enjoy the hike because the rewards are amazing!
